All DNA viruses =
_____ stranded
replicate in the _________
nonenveloped DNA viruses typically have what shaped capsid?
All DNA viruses are
double stranded - exept parvo (smallest)

replicate the nucleus (except Pox = largest)

nonenvelped DNA viruses have icosahedral capsid
Mnemonic for remembering DNA viruses:

special traits
Pardon PaPa As He Has Pox (7)

from smallest to largest
parvo (ssDNA)
papilloma
polyoma
adeno
hepadna
herpes
Pox (replicates in cytoplasm)

remember all dna viruses are double stranded, replicate in the nucleus and only the first four (parvo, papilloma, polyoma, adeno) are noneveloped with an icosahedral capsid
All RNA Viruses are single stranded except for ______
reovirus = linear dsRNA
Nonenveloped vs Enveloped Viruses

compare components of outer layer?
sensitivity to head/acid/detergent/drying?
transmission?
survival in GI?
host immune response?
function?
Nonenveloped viruses:
-proteins = outer layer = capsid
-resistant to heat/acid/drying, etc and thus survives the GI tract
-Ab response
-transmission = fomits, dust, fecal-oral
-capsid components recognize and bind cell surface receptors of host

Enveloped viruses
-components = glycoproteins, phospholipids, prot from host cell membrane
-sensitive to heat, acid/detergents, etc so don't survive GI
-host response is Ab and cell mediated immune response
-viral envelope glycoproteins function in virion entrace inyto host (attachment, fusion proteins, enzymes like neuraminidase)
Mnemonic for remembering + RNA viruses

special traits
Call Hey to Pico and Fay To Come Rightaway

Calci
Hepe
Picorna
Flavi
Toga
Corona
Retro

All + RNA are single stranded (reovirus - not here is dsRNA)

All replicate in the cytoplasm except Retrovirus

All are linear and nonsegmented - REO virus is segmented

All are enveloped except first three (calci, hepe, Picorna)
Mnemonic for remembering (-) RNA viruses

special traits
Pain Results From Our Bunions Always (pain is negative)

Paramyxo
Rhabdo (bullet)
Filo
Orthomyxo (cytoplasm + nuc)
Bunya
Arena

All are enveloped, helical (except Rhabdo), have polymerase and replicate in the cytoplasm (except orthomyxo - replicates in both cyoplasm and nucleus)
Mnemonic for naked RNA viruses
Help CPR!!

Hepe (dsRNA)
Calci
Picorna
Reo

all + RNA viruses
