Nominal Scale

- Sorts events by classification

- E.g. taxonomy in biology

Ordinal scale

- Sorts by order/ranking and often involves numeric values

- Doesn't show the distance between items

- E.g. customer surverys: rate your satisfaction on a scale of 1-5

Interval scale

- Shows order and distance between items

- No real 0

- Can only do addition and subtraction

- E.g. temperature: 20 degrees is 20 degrees colder than 40 degrees. However, you can't really say it's half as cold.

Ratio scale

- Rank, distance, and real 0

- E.g. height and weight

Frequency distribution

A list, table or graph that displays all possible outcomes of an event and their relative frequencies

Grouped distribution

- Frequencies are assigned to groups of possibilities rather than particular possibilities.

- E.g. a grouped distribution of weight might include groups of 10 pound increments (between 100-110, 110-120, etc. ).

- These 10 pound increments are called the CLASS INTERVAL

Midpoint of a class interval

Usually the average between the lowest value in the group and highest value in the group

Histogram

- Type of bar graph that displays frequency distribution

- Bars are touching

- Area under the graph adds up to 1
