List as many objects or substances you can think of and put them in the following 3 categories: SOLID, LIQUID, and GAS.

GASES: SOLIDS: LIQUIDS:-Carbon Dioxide -Ice -Soda-Carbon Monoxide -Diamond -Blood -Water

What exactly is matter? In your definition, also list the 3 states of matter.

Anything that has weight and take up space.

Describe the way particles are arranged in a solid, liquid, and gas.

*All matter are made up of tiny particles*The tiny particles are called ATOMS and MOLECULES.*Solid* Have very few gaps. *Liquid* Are free moving to a point. *Gas*Are very far apart.

Find a picture with your lab partner in Google that shows the properties of a solid, liquid, and gas. Get Mr. Oste approval, then copy and paste that picture into your warm-up templates.

No fixed shape means the substance takes the shape of the container

What can you tell me about the motion of the molecules in cold water?

The motion of particles (molecules) is barely moving but the particles still are flowing.

List the variables and controls in the Mixing Colors Lab.

CONTROL: Conditions that are the same in an experiment. VARIABLE: Conditions that are different in an experiment.CONTROLS: Same amount and colors of food coloring. Same amount of water. Same beaker.VARIABLES: Hot and cold water in 2 separate beakers.

What can you tell me about the motion of the molecules in hot water?

The hot liquid get faster and don’t bump into one another as much as if they are turning into gas.And when they do hit one another they hit them fast and violently.

Why is it so easy for me to put a dent in a ping pong ball or a tennis ball, but not easy for me to put a dent in a soda can?

Inside each item is an amount of GAS.Gases can help flow - they move easily.Gases inside a tennis ball / ping - pong ball spread out.Gases inside a liquid are more tightly packed.

What do you think is happening in the giant barrel at the moment of the crush?

At the moment of the crush, cold water is making the molecules go slower and move closer together. The CRUSH is a visual to show those molecules.

Look at the picture in our Schoology UPDATE of deflated gold helium balloons outside. Why would balloons deflate outside in this type of weather?

Molecules inside a warm balloon are take the shape of the balloon and they are getting faster but when it's cold they get slower and they deflat.

In celebration of Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, list 2 things you are thankful for.

1: The first thing I’m thankful for is my family.2: The second thing I’m thankful for is that I have really great friends.

How do you think ice cubes change from a solid to a liquid? Hypothesize what you think is happening in a few sentences.

Ice changes from SOLID to a LIQUID by getting heated up (heat or energy is applied to it), (the pressure of the heat makes it go faster and change into water but if it get’s heated to much it will turn into a GAS.)

Describe what happens when a PHASE CHANGE occurs.

A PHASE CHANGE is any change of in matter from solid, liquid, & gas.Phase changes occur because of a change in ENERGY, HEAT, or PRESSURE. Examples: Melting, Freezing, Condensation, Vaporization

What are the two types of vaporization?

Evaporation - Occurs on the surface & below the liquid.Boiling - Occurs on the surface

View the two links attached to your Daily Update and describe what “Sublimation” is in a couple sentences.

SUBLIMATION is when we change from a solid to a gas. We skip the liquid phase changes. An example of sublimation is dry ice.
