Definition of State

A territory occupied by number of persons which are independent of external controls and having an organised government to maintain peace and justice within its territory.

Elements of state

Population- sine qua non of the state. No fix number but it should be considerable number.


Territory- to from a state there must be a permanent settlement are for the population to grow. Nomadic people cannot for a state as the don't hv the territory.



Government- there must be a superior authority to enfoce the law so that a state can look after the population and provide protect to its territory from external force. Government is established for well being of the population and its development with the Territory.




Sovereignty- the sovereignty means the supreme authority with superior powers. It says that a state must be free from external controls and it's citizen should be obedient.




Theories of origin of state

Force theory- it say that state was formed by using force where strong people use to rule the weaker one and led to form the state.



Divine Theory- it says that state was created by God in which king was given the power to control and govern people of the state by divine authority.



Social contract theory - it says that a state is the result of the agreement between the people who met instantly and agreed to give the certain authority to the leader



Natural theory -according to Aristotle the state is the product of man's instinct without men state cannot survive and without state man cannot survive.



Historical or evolution theory-according to this theory the state is the result of course of evolution . The society passed through various stages and various factor help in shaping and developing it . This state came into being through a gradual process of development and this theory of origin is most convincing theory
