1) The intersection of History and Biography.

The ability to understand “ the intersection between biography and history,” or the interplay of self and the world.

Sociological Paradigms

1) Structural functionalism ( Macro level) - Sees society as a stable, ordered system made up of interrelated parts or structures.


2)Social Conflict ( Macro level) - Sees society as an arena of inequality that generates tension.


3) Symbolic Interactionism (Micro level) - Sees society as the product of the everyday interactions of individuals.

Paradigms: a set of assumptions, theories, and perspectives that make up a way of understanding social reality.

Socialization

The way in which individuals can learn skills, values, motives, and roles appropriate to their position or group in society.

What are the two Sociological Research Methods?


What is involved in both methods?

1) Quantitative Methods is data that can be converted in numbers. It involves SURVEYs or an experiment administered to a sample of respondents selected from a target population.


2) Qualitative Methods is data that cannot easily be converted to #s . It involves Ethnography: studying people in their own environment by observing. And Interviews: select a sample of people to be interviewed from a target population.

Quantitative: converted into #s



Qualitative: cannot easily be converted to #s and has to do with Ethnography and Interviews.


Race

It is not biological, it is socially constructed.

Prejudice

A negative judgment made before knowledge is obtained.

“All Irish are drunks” or “All Mexicans are lazy”

Discrimination

Unfair treatment against someone else.

A person might be said to suffer discrimination if she is turned down for a job promotion or a home loan because she’s black or Hispanic.
