What happened at Fort Sumter?
Lincoln sent supplies to Sumter. When the Confederate soldiers saw the ship they assumed that Lincoln had sent men assist the people holding the fort and fired on Fort Sumter. No one died but the walls of the fort crumbled, the Union soldiers surrendered and the Civil War had started
What happened at the Battle of Bull Run?
People gathered to watch the battle with picnic baskets. They were going to see the Union crush the Confederacy. But Confederate soldiers did not turn and run instead, inspired by General "Stonewall" Jackson they held their ground. It was the Union soldiers that ran in the end.
What happened at Antietam?
Robert E. Lee took the offensive, he thought that a victory in the N. would weaken the Union's will to fight. He started to go North but a messenger lost Lee's battle plans. When a Union soldier found them he gave them to General McClellan. McClellan intercepted Lee at Antietam. Over 24,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were killed. By dusk the 2 armies were in the exact same place as before. In the morning McClellan saw that Lee had retreated during the night. Since Lee had retreated it was counted as a Union victory.
What happened at Gettysburg?
By accident some of Lee's men found Union troops at Gettysburg PA. Both sides sent reinforcements. From June. 1st to June. 3rd over 150,000 soldiers fought outside the town. Union troops under General Meade gained the high ground on the 1st day. Unsuccessful in removing his enemy from the high ground Lee made a desperate attack on the Union soldiers; this was called Pickett's Charge.
What was Pickett's Charge?
Pickett's Charge was a desperate attack by Lee. Lee was unaware of the fact that Union soldiers had rifles. Pickett and his troops were mowed down on the hill.
What happened at Appomattox Courthouse?
Lee thought that the Union troops at Appomattox Courthouse consisted solely of 1 cavalry regiment but instead there was a cavalry regiment and 2 regiments of foot-soldiers with artillerary. When Lee witnessed the amount of Union troops he postponed the battle. General Grant sent a letter to Lee asking for Lee's surrender. Lee understood that the odds were against him on a large scale and agreed to the surrender to prevent a 'hopeless effusion of blood'. The Confederate soldiers were treated kindly and were allowed to return home unharmed and unprosecuted.
Why was Abraham Lincoln important?
Because he was the current president, passed the Emancipation Proclamation, and his entire time in office was devoted to stopping the war.
Who was Jefferson Davis and why was he important?
Pres. of Confederacy. Let Lee kinda rule over army by himself.
Who was Robert E. Lee and why was he important?
He was the commander of the Confederate army if the Union didn't have more supplies he probaly would have won.
