Who is Roger Williams, what did he do and why is he important?
Discovered puritanism, believed in free practice of religion, Went to salem and plymouth and was rejected for not worshiping the church of England and even put on trial, Purchased land and established Providence, RI which became a place of worship for anyone wanting to escape from non-freedom of religion.
He gave us 2 things: Separation of Church and State, and freedom of religion.
Who is John Peter Zenger, what did he do and why is he important?
Gave us the FIRST amendment of free press which is important for people to have opinions which fall into freedom of speech. Accused of Libel (false accusations which harms rep). He made accusations about corrupt government and the governor calling him "idiot", which got people mad at him.
Who is Andrew Hamilton, what did he do and why is he important?
He stepped up in defense of John Peter Zenger, he is a famous lawyer and out of the blue stepped up for him, saying that he did print it but it was a act of freedom of liberty
Who were George, Cecil, and Leonard Calvert and why are they important.
Involved in the Maryland Toleration Act. George was father of Leonard and Cecil. Leonard and Cecil founded the Maryland Colony in 1634. George came from England to escape the religious views that were forced on them, and came to America hoping to have this freedom but it wasn't there so got permission to establish the colony in the Chesapeake area, but died before he could establish it fully, and was completed by his sons leonard and cecil. In the end Maryland was tolerant of Roman Catholics
Who was William Bradford and what was his importance
He is the one that wrote the Mayflower Compact.
Maryland Toleration Act of 1649
George Calvet wanted religious freedom, bought Maryland, died Sons cecil and leonard founded it which gave religious freedom. (gathered for town meeting and passed this law) This gave us religious freedom and contributed to the first amendment.
Mayflower compact of 1620
All the pilgrims of the Mayflower signed it to agree to the terms of everyone on the boat, everyone left to escape religious persecution under king james, written by William Bradford, near Cape Cod, This was to reate a government for the people by the people, and for survival of the colony. This would establish the tradition of america today which leads to town meetings
Virginia House of Burgesses
Virginia Leader sir Edwin Sandy's instructed governor to make changes for the better of the colony such as pass laws against gambling and drunkenness, price regulations on crops and tobacco, and create a justice system
New England Town Meetings
way for people to voice opinions, written down customs, give opinions on issues like finances, salaries, and money of the town. Every town in Massachusetts are required to hold at least one town meeting a year, they also need a warrant for them to know when along with a agenda of the town meeting
