Columbus though he had reached Asia in 1492. The land did not match Marco Polo's descriptions of Asia. Balboa had reached the Pacific Ocean and realized he had discovered an unknown continent. |

Costs: money to pay for ships, crew and supplies. Ships could sink or an explorer might not find anything valuable. Benefits: gold, furs, valuable resources, claiming new lands, gaining power, and spreading Christianity. |
