Christopher Columbus is definitely one of the most important figures of the world history. Not only for the fact that in 1467 he travelled to Iceland when he was sixteen years old, but also for the fact that he discovered America in 1492 at the same time as he was searching for a new trade route to the Indies. Columbus was now making the first connections between the Europeans and the Americans. Leading then to the famous “Colombians exchange” which was extensive transfer of animals, plants, culture, human populations, technology and ideas between the New word and Old world. The New World is the name used for the Western Hemisphere, specifically the Americas but also including islands such as those of the Caribbean and Bermuda.

As we know, sugar cane is an Asian product but it only grows really well in the New World. Because of the huge sugar cane demand, the supply (labor) was increasing a lot. That is when slavery started to become a big thing in the New World. The advantages of having slaves over regular employees are considerable. The most evident one is the low cost of having slaves working for you (which was none). Also, the slaves already knew the process of growing sugar cane so it was not something new for them. Quilombos was the name of the Maroon village in Brazil. The Maroon in general survived by hunting and growing vegetables. They used to invite any other slaves to join their community and they used to kill as many slavemasters as possible.
