Northern factories used free labor to weave cotton into cloth. Southern workers used enslaved workers to grow cotton.

States' Rights. It meant that states could decide whether they wanted to allow slavery or not. New states could also decide on their own about slavery.

No. Many Northerners were abolitionists. They did not want new states to be able to allow slavery.

1860. Southerners were furious after his election because he wanted to stop the spread of slavery.

Laws in the South that kept black people and white people apart, or segregated.

What were the Jim Crow laws?

Many were forced to move from their lands as white settlers moved there. The government set up reservations for them to live on. They did not want to move and fought hard against it.

What happened to the Native Americans as white Americans began to move west? What was the government's attempt to help? How did the Native Americans feel about that?
