Many of them were becoming homesick, so I thought that if I told them a story, they would fall asleep before they thought about home.
Compound-complex
Now I will tell that story to you.
Simple
Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away, there lived a beautiful princess.
simple
This princess was different; she had to stay away from water.
Compound
If her skin ever touched water, all of her beautiful hair would fall out.
Complex
Her hair was not the only thing that made her beautiful because her face and frame were beautiful too.
Complex
But in her kingdom, beauty was based in large part on a woman’s hair.
Simple
When she was a baby, before her parents knew about this, they did bathe her in water.
Complex
That was how they found out about the danger of water for their little girl.
Complex
As a result, she lost all of her hair within an hour.
Simple
Even though her hair was short and easy to grow back, her parents were mortified.
Complex
They thought that if she lost her hair, no prince from another kingdom would want their daughter’s hand in marriage.
Complex
Their daughter’s future marriage was very important to them, so they kept her inside the castle at all times.
compound
Since they lived near the coast, they did not want to risk anything.
complex
They sheltered her from the outside world, but they did not explain to her why she could not go outside.
Compound-complex
Even without explanation, she obeyed her parents’ wishes.
simple
Sometimes, however, the desire to go outside with the other children she saw from her window was overwhelming.
complex
One the day of her twelfth birthday, her parents threw her a big celebration feast, but they held it inside and invited only adults.
Compound
She was lonely for some friends of her own age and for the outdoors, where she always saw other children her age.
Complex
After the feast, she went up to her room as usual and began looking out the window.
simple
She saw and heard children playing in the waves of the ocean.
Simple
She wondered what the ocean must feel like.
Complex
She had learned about it, but she had never been near it herself.
Compound
In a random, unprecedented act of rebellion, she decided that she would go to the ocean and see what it was like.
Complex
Her parents were sleeping early because of the party, so that evening, she snuck out of the castle without a problem.
Compound
As soon as her feet hit the sand, she ran toward the ocean.
complex
For once in her life, she felt free and alive.
simple
Meanwhile, down the beach a little ways, sat a young servant boy who had also escaped his life of confine if only for a night.
Complex
He saw the young princess but did not recognize who she was.
Complex
He saw only a beautiful young girl that captured his attention with her radiant expression and gorgeous hair.
Complex
He watched as the princess ran until she reached the edge of the incoming waves.
Complex
He smiled at her, but the princess didn’t know that he was there.
Compound-complex
After taking in the majesty and freedom of the waves, the princess ran into them.
Simple
She ran farther and farther, but she soon found herself overwhelmed amid the deeper waters.
Compound
As the young boy watched, at first he was intrigued and amused, but then he realized that this girl was in distress.
Compound-complex
She couldn’t swim because she had never learned, and the boy realized this as he watched her struggling in the water.
Compound-complex
Unlike her, he was an excellent swimmer.
Simple
In his young childhood, as an unclaimed orphan, he wandered the kingdom alone and was free to do what he wanted, so he spent much of his time at the shore.
Compound-complex
He immediately jumped up and furiously swam toward the princess.
Simple
He dragged her to shore with all the strength he could gather and lay exhausted beside her on the shore.
Complex
When the boy again became conscious, he awoke back in the kitchen in his master’s home.
Complex
He asked what had happened, and the cook told him that they had found him near the shore.
Compound-complex
The boy asked what had become of the little girl.
Complex
The cook said that he didn’t see a little girl, but he said that if there was one, she must have been whisked off before he arrived.
Compound-complex
The cook was right that the little girl was whisked off quickly.
complex
The king and queen had discovered that their daughter was missing soon after she left and sent out a few servants to find her.
Complex
They didn’t want anyone to know that the princess was outside and didn’t want to cause a stir.
Complex
The king and queen sent the servants to the beach first because that was where they felt the greatest danger was.
Complex
The servants after shortly after her rescue, and they took her away before anyone else arrived at the scene.
Compound-complex
The king, the queen, and the servants dried the princess immediately.
Simple
They hoped that they could dry her before the water took effect or that, by some miracle, the curse was gone.
Complex
Neither hope was fulfilled; the princess lost her hair within an hour.
Compound
The princess did not understand what was going on until she lost her hair, and then her parents told her about the danger of water.
Compound-complex
She was sad because her parents convinced her that she would never get married without hair.
Compound-complex
From then on, the princess no longer looked out her window with longing.
Simple
Even though her parents had a wig made for her secretly, she felt ashamed of her appearance.
Complex
No one in the kingdom would know what happened or think that she looked any different because they had never since her, but the princess knew that she was not who she once was.
Compound-complex

During this time, her parents still made arrangements for her marriage to a young prince from a neighboring kingdom.
Simple

The marriage would take place on the day of the princess’s 18th birthday.

On that day, the entire kingdom was invited to the grand hall in the castle for the wedding.

This was the first time that they would see their young princess.
complex
When she came down the stairs in her gorgeous white gown, the crowd sighed in awe of her beauty.
Complex
The princess heard the admiration, but she felt ashamed and ugly because of her mistake six years ago that made her wear a wig to hide her ugly hair.
compound
The young servant boy who had rescued her years ago was also there at the wedding.
Complex
When he saw the princess, he too was taken with her beauty, but he had a nagging feeling that he had seen someone who looked like her before.
Compound-complex
As the princess walked down the aisle toward her prince, she was so distracted that she stumbled over her long gown and veil.
Complex
The crowd gasped as the princess’s veil and her wig fell from her head.
Complex
The princess’s attendants rushed to her side and tried to put back the veil and the wig, but the crowd and the prince had already seen the princess’s secret.
Compound
The king tried to explain to the kingdom and the prince about the princess’s unfortunate curse and accident, but the prince refused to listen.
Compound

He claimed that the king and queen had deceived him about the princess and stormed out of the hall.

The king, queen, and princess felt embarrassed, and the crowd felt confused.
Compound

He admonished the crowd for their changed affections toward the princess.
Simple
He declared that he has loved her since he rescued her and that nothing could change his feelings.
Complex
Despite her hair, she was still the same princess with the same zest for life and same radiant expression.
Simple
The king and queen were so moved that they told the boy that he could marry their daughter if he wished, so he married the love of his life that day in the presence of the entire kingdom and became a prince.
