Tuber:
an underground stem. Roots grow out of them. Example: potato.
Bulb:
a large bud made from a stem. Example: Onion
Runner:
A form of asexual reproduction. Stems that run along the ground. Example: many grasses and strawberries
Stem Cutting:
a form of asexual reproduction. Roots can grow directly from a stem. Example: Sugar cane
Glucose:
This is the food that a plant makes when using photosynthesis. It is a sugar.
Chloroplast:
Green cells in leaves that absorb light energy during photosynthesis.
Stomata:
guard cells a hole in the bottom of leaves that takes in carbon dioxide to help the plant make glucose (sugar). It also lets out extra water.
Photosynthesis:
when a plant uses water, minerals, carbon dioxide and sunlight to make its food (glucose)
Respiration:
photosynthesis makes the sugar, but respiration breaks it down to give energy to the plant.
Transpiration:
when a plant uses the stomata to get rid of any extra water not used in photosynthesis.
Tropism:
the way a plant behaves or responds to stimuli.
Germination
the point when a plant seed shows the first sign of life. Usually when the first root breaks through the seed coat.
Fertilization:
the point when a male sperm cell contacts the female egg cell.
