Compass

An instrument used to determine direction. The needle will always point magnetic North.

Sun

A star around which Earth and other planets revolve around.

Thermometer

A tool to measure temperature.

Absorb

To take up, soak in, or capture. Black things absorb the Sun’s energy best.

Solar Energy

Energy from the Sun. This includes visible light and infrared light that can be felt as heat.

Solar Collector

A material used to capture solar energy in a water heater or other device. The solar collector in our solar water heater was black plastic.

Reflect

To bounce back. White and light colored things reflect the Sun’s energy best.

Heat Sink

A material (such as water that can absorb a large amount of heat and then release the energy slowly).

Orientation

A position or arrangement in relation to another position or location.

Direction

A course or line along which something moves, lies, or points.
