Plasma
The liquid part of blood. About 55% of the blood is plasma. Made up of 90% water and 10% dissolved materials, including glucose.
They yellow color in plasma is due to what?
protein content
Red Blood cells
take up oxygen in the lungs and deliver it to cells. made up mostly of hemoglobin. disk like, flexible cells. Do not contain a nucleus
Where are red blood cells produced?
in the bone marrow
hemoglobin
iron containing protein that chemically binds to oxygen
white blood cells
the body's disease fighters. some alert the body to foreign invaders, some produce chemicals to fight invaders, others surround and kill the invaders
platelets
cell fragments that produce fibrin for blood clotting
fibrin
a protein produced by platelets that act as a net catching red blood cells to clot them and stop blood flow
blood transfusion
transference of blood from 1 person to another
marker molecules
determine the blood type and type of blood that can be safely recieved in a transfusion. Red blood cells with foreign marker molecules are affected by proteins found in the plasma that causes the cells with "foreign" markers to clump together
safe transfusions
blood that does not contain red blood cells with marker molecules that your body sees as foreign.
cross-matching
when your blood type is checked against blood that was donated to ensure that it is compatible before a transfusion.
Blood Type A can safely recieve
Blood types A and O
Blood Type B can safely recieve
Blood types B and O
Blood Type AB can safely recieve
Blood types A, B, AB, and O
Blood Type O can safely recieve
Blood type O
lymph
liquid that leaks out across the capillaries. It is called lympy when it enters the lympathic system. made up of water and dissolved materials (like glucose), this fluid carries the materials that cells and tissues need.
lymph nodes
small knobs of tissue that act as filters for the lymph
When do lympy nodes enlarge?
When the body is fighting an infections
atherosclerosis
the thickening of the artery wall due to the build up of fatty materials (like cholesterol). Especially bad when it occurs in the coronary arteries
heart attack
occurs when the blood to the heart or part of the heart is blocked adn the heart does not receive the oxygen it needs. cells in the heart can die, this permanently damages the heart
hypertension
high blood pressure - consistently higher than 140/90. Is not always related to atherosclerosis, but often occur together
3 ways to keep the cardiovascular system healthy
exercise, balanced diet, avoid smoking
How does exercise help your heart?
strengthens the heart muscle and helps to prevent atherosclerosis
How does a balanced diet help your heart?
a diet low in fat and low in cholesterol can help to prevent the fatty buildup on arterial walls. Also reduce sodium to help prevent hypertension
How does smoking damage your heart?
smoking causes damage to the lungs, the heart and the blood vessels
