What is a variable?

A variable is any item, factor, or condition that can be controlled or changed

What is a hypothesis?

A hypothesis is an educated prediction that can be tested.

What is an aim?

An aim is a statement that describes the purpose of doing the experiment

Identify the components of the Bunsen burner.

Independent variable

The variable you change

Also known as manipulated variable

Dependent variable

The variable you measure

Also known as experimental variable

Controlled variable

Variable that stays the same

Materials

The equipment you'll require for an experiment

Method

The process or order to do an experiment (should be step-by-step)

Results

The outcome of an experiment/the data you collect

Observation

Knowledge you receive from your senses

Bunsen Burner|Number the steps:

A) Connect the rubber hose to the gas tap

B) turn on the gas tap and a yellow flame will appear

C) check the gas tap is in the 'off' position

D) place bunsen burner on a heat proof mat

E) light a match and hold it a few centimetres above the barrel

F) close the airhole of the bunsen burner collar

G) remember to close the collar to return the flame to yellow when the Bunsen Burner is not in use

H) adjust the flame by moving the collar until the airhole is open and a blue flame appears

1) place bunsen burner on heat-proof mat

2) check the gas tap is in the 'off' position

3) connect the rubber house to the gas tap

4) close the airhole of the collar

When pouring from a container without a lip, what do you use?

A filter funnel

To hold containers over a Bunsen Burner flame, what equipment do you use?

Gauze mat: distributes heat more evenly

Tripod

Continuous data

Temperature, time, length, distance

What is the difference between quantitative and qualitative data?

Quantitative data is information that can be measured and written down in numbers.

Qualitative data is information that can't actually be measured.

What is the scientific method?

a method of procedure consisting of observation, measurement, experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.

You wear safety goggles when:

heat, chemicals & glassware are used

If you want a orange flame, what do you do to the airhole?

Close the airhole

If you want a blue flame, what do you do to the airhole?

Open the airhole
