Digestion
process of food being broken down into smaller particles
Saliva
helps break down foods
Esophagus
Musucular tube that extends from the back of your mouth to your stomach.
Sphincter
Allows food to enter stomach. Small flap that prevents water and food moving back up into hte esophagus once the food is in the stomach.
Enzymes
Special type of protien. Each type has special function. Enzymes break down proteins nto amino acids.
Stomach
Located in left side of body. Stores food, churns and mixes food, and digests proteins.
Stomach Juices
Water enzymes and acid make up juices
Mucus
Lines the walls of the stomach. Prevents acid from burning walls
Small Intestine
Foods are copmletely broken down. Nutrients are absorbed.
Pancreas
Neutralizes stomach acid.
Liver
Produces bile
Bile
Helps break fat into small droplets
Gallbladder
Stores bile. Tucked under the liver.
Villi
Provide surface area for the absorption of nutrients.
Large Intestine
No vili. Coated with vili.
Rectum
Stores wastes until they leave body.
Anus
Final part of digestive system-- Two muscles control opening and closing of the rectum.
Large Intestine
Absorption of water and storage of leftovers. Doesn't digest.
Feces
Leftovers. 75% water, 25% bacteria, fiber, undigested food, mucus and dead cells.
Bowel Movement
removal of feces from large intestine.
