ripsaw
cuts with the grain of the wood. normal blade is 26'' long and has 4-7 teeth per inch
backsaw

sometimes called a compass saw. it is used to cut curves and holes in plywood and wallboard
jigsaw
makes straight and curved cuts
band saw
cuts curves and resaws stock to thinner sizes. the size of a band saw is determined by the throat (distance from blade to vertical support)
hacksaw
cuts metal
reciprocating saw
mainly for rough cuts; ideal for making holes in existing walls when remodeling
reciprocating saw blades
range in length 2 1/2'' to 12''. some will cut very thick wood; others will cut metal. use the shortest blade possible for the job.
miter box
used with a backsaw to makes cuts at precise angles
table saw
the most commonly used saw. its size is determined by the diameter of the largest blade it can use. the 10'' saw the most common. the bench-top model is portable and useful certain " on-the-job" applications, but a larger floor model usually makes smoother, more accurate cut
featherboard
holds the workpiece against the fence while you make rip cuts
pushstick
used tp push wood through the saw while keeping fingers away from the blade
circular saw

sliding compound miter saw
makes compound miter cuts at angles up to 45 degrees either side of center. some models cut stock as thick as 4 1/2'' and wide as 12''
power miter saw
makes straight and angled cuts. on some models, the blade can be tilted for compound miters
radial-arm saw
good for cross-cutting long boards. the blade can be angled, tilted, and rotated to make different cuts. it is also used for ripping and making dadoes
scroll saw
the best tool for intricate and accurate irregular curves. the blade can be inserted inside a hole for interior cuts
saw blades

crosscut, rip, and plywood
