Rules for naming Ionic compounds
1. balance charges (charges should equal zero)
2.cation is always written first (in name and formula) 3. If cation is capable of multiple oxidation states then its charges must be indicated with Roman numerals within parentheses following the cation name 4. change the ending of the anion to -ide, unless it is a polyatomic ion |
Acid Rules: when name of anion ends in -ide:
-acid name begins w/ prefix hydro
-stem of anion has suffix -ic and is followed by word "acid" |
Acid Rules: when name of anion ends in -ite:
-acid does not have prefix
-stem of anion has suffix -ous and is followed by word "acid" |
Acid Rules: when name of anion ends in -ate:
-acid name does not have prefix
-stem of anion has suffix -ic and is followed by word "acid" |
