identify yourself, explain procedure, secure his/her consent; identify patient, dob check id

gather necessary equipment

wash hands; put on gloves

tie tourniquet and palate the vein in the antecubital fossa using your index finger, remove tourniquet

open alcohol

tie tourniquet 3-4 inches above site where procedure is being done. ask patient to make fist to help engorge vein.

palate vein while looking for straightest point; cleanse area using circular motion starting at the inside of the venipuncture site

while site drying assemble needle and tube holder, uncap the needle and examine for defects such blunted or barbed point

Hold the patients arm by placing four fingers on the side of forearm and your thumb below the antecubital area slightly pulling the skin back to anchor the vein.
