Rock
A solid mixture of crystals of one or more minerals or other materials.
Composition
The makeup of a rock; describes either the minerals or elements present in it.
Texture
The sizes, shapes and positions of the grains that a rock is made of.
Rock Cycle
The process by which one rock type changes into another rock type.
Sedimentary Rock
Rock that forms when sediments are compacted and cemented together.
Strata
Layers of sedimentary rock that form from the deposition of sediment.
Metamorphic Rock
Rock that forms when the texture and composition of preexisting rock changes due to heat or pressure.
Magma
The hot liquid that forms when rock partially or completely melts; may include mineral crystals
Igneous Rock
Rock that forms from the cooling of magma.
Intrusive Rock
The type of igneous rock that forms when magma cools and solidifies beneath Earth's surface
Extrusive Rock
The type of igneous rock that forms when lava or pyroclastic material cools and solidifies on the Earth's surface
Lithification
The compaction & cementation of sediments forming sedimentary rocks
Metamorphic Rock
A type of rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions.
Fusion
The change of a substance from a solid to a liquid state, usually by the application of heat
Frosion
Movement of material from one place to another on Earth's surface. Agents of movement include gravity, water, ice, and wind.
Crystallization
Process through which crystals separate from fluid, viscous, or dispersed state
Rock Cycle
Forces deep inside of the Earth and at the surface produce a slow cycle that builds, destroys and changes the rocks in the crust.
Mineral
A naturally occurring substance that is solid and stable at room temperature, represented by a chemical formula, usually not organic, and has an ordered atomic structure. It is different from a rock, which can be an made of many different minerals or non-minerals and does not have a specific chemical composition.
