Threaded fastener

Device such as a nut or bolt that joins or fastens parts together with threads

What was the whitworth thread angle?

55 degrees

Sellars develpoed the american national thread which had a standard thread angle of what?

60 degrees

What is a screw thread series?

A group of diameter-pitch combinations. The standard series is a screw thread series of coarse (UNC/UNRC), fine ( UNF/UNRF) and extra-fine(UNEF/UNREF) graded putches and eight series with constant piches.

Pitch

Distance between corresponding points on adjacent thread forms. Measure parallel to the axis.

Graded pitch

A standard screw thread series with a differnet number of threads per inch based on diameter

Constant pitch

A standard screw thead series with a set number of threads per inch regardless of diameter

Tolerance

The amount of variation allowed above or below a dimension

Allowance

The differnce between the design size and the basic size of a thread

What are the classes of threads?

1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B. A designates external threads and B internal. The tolerance is tighter at 1 than 3.

Nonthreaded fastener

A device that joins or fastens parts together without threads. Most common example is a rivet.

Types of bolts

Square head, hex cap, round head, countersunk bolt, step bolt and round head square neck carriage bolt

Type of bolt heads

Hex washer, flat countersunk, oval countersunk, hex, round, truss, pan, fillister, button, square, round countersunk and headless

Types of driving recesses for screws and bolts?

Hex socket, phillips recess, drilled spanner, fluted socket, frearson recess, slotted spanner, slotted, clutch recess, one-way and pozidriv

Head styles of rivets?

Pan, button, flat countersunk, flat, belt, coopers, tinners, truss, high button, cone, boiler and globe

Structural steel

Steel used in the erection of structures

Beam

I shaped structural steel used to provide support over long expanses. Standard are S, wide-flange are W, misc shaped are M and bearing piles are HP

Channel

C shaped structural steel used in conjunction with other shapes as support members or combined to create and serve as an I beam

Angle

L shaped structural steel

Tee

T shaped structural member made by cut I beam, from mill specs or 2 angles combined

Difference between tubing and pipe?

Tubing is used for structural applications while pipe carries gasses or liquids.

Tubing is specs bynoutside dimensions and wall thickness while pipe is based on nominal sizes with variojs wall thicknesses typically called schedules.

Difference between sheet and plate?

Plate is generally 3/16" or thicker while sheet is 1/8" or less.

Threaded fasteners are based upon an inclined ______________ wrapped around a cylinder.
plane
What is the distance between corresponding points on adjacent thread forms.
pitch - it is always measured parallel to the axis
Rivet ____________ is the effective holding length of a rivet.
grip
What is the distance from the edge of the plate to the center line of the nearest row of rivets?
margin
The size of a rivet required is determined by the _________ of the parts being joined.
thickness - the length is truly the thickness of the parts plus enough material for the shank to be upset to the desired shape.
Which dimension in an unequal leg angle iron is always given first?
the longer leg
