How are floodplains formed?

When a river exceeds bankfull it floods. Energy is lost on the surrounding land and therefore the river deposits it's eroded material. This builds up in the flood plain (making it higher).

Floodplains are also formed by the lateral migration of meanders. They cut onto the outside bend, but deposit on the inner --this deposition forms a new floodplain.

What are levees?

Levees are natural embankments along the edge of a river channel.

How are levees formed?

Levees are formed because during a flood eroded material is deposited over the whole flood plain. The heaviest material is deposited closest to the river channel, but it get dropped first when the river slows down. Over time the deposited material builds up creating levees along the edges of the channel.

Give an example of a river with levees.
