What is the function of the Respiratory System?
To acquire oxygen from the atmosphere & remove excess CO2 from the body
What is the Cardio-Pulmonary system?
The ♡ and the lungs working closely w/one another
What are the components of the upper respiratory tract?
•Mouth
•Nasopharynx
•Oropharynx
•Laryngopharynx
•Larynx
What is the function of the Respiratory membrane?
Where the exchange of gases in the lungs (external respiration) takes place
What is the Respiratory membrane made of?
Alveolar wall and the capillary wall fused firmly together
What happens to the ribs when breathing in?
•Move outwards when pulled upwards
•Enlarges the thoracic cavity
•Intercostal muscles stimulated to contract by the intercostal nerves
How does the chest change in size during inspiration?
•External intercostal muscles CONTRACT
•Chest EXPANDS
•Diaphragm CONTRACTS
What happens to the chest size during expiration?
•External intercostal muscles RELAX
•Chest RECOILS
•Diaphragm RELAXES
What cavities does the Diaphragm separate?
Thoracic & abdominal
(forms the floor of the thoracic cavity & the roof of the abdominal cavity)
How is respiration controlled?
Chemoreceptors
What are Chemoreceptors?
Receptors that respond to changes in partial pressures of O2 & CO2 in the blood cerebrospinal fluid
How is breathing controlled?
•CO2 = main stimulus
•Increased conc. of CO2 alters pH of blood = more acidic
•Stimulates chemoreceptors in blood vessels/brain stem
•Sensory nervous impulses relayed to Respiratory Centre in brain stem (medulla oblongata)
•Responds by sending 'motor' impulses back to muscles associated w/breathing to increase rate/depth
•Removes CO2
What is the function of the pharynx?
•Passageway for:
food
air
•Resonating chamber for speech
What arte the divisions of the Pharynx?
Nasopharynx
Oropharynx
Laryngopharynx
What is the passage way of air?
Pharynx, Larynx, Trachea, Bronchi, Bronchioles
What happens to air as it travels over the moist mucosa?
Becomes saturated w/water vapour
What is the Mucociliary escalator?
SYNCHRONOUS & REGULAR BEATING of the cilia of the mucous membrane
What are the functions of the upper airway?
Filtering, warming & humidifying of inspired air
