Breathin in (Inspiration)

When breathing in,the muscles of the diaphragm contract.


This pulls the diaphragm downwards,which increases the volume in the thorax.


As the volume increases,the pressure inside it falls velocity atmospheric pressure.Air therefore flows in the trachea.

Breathing out (expiration)

When breathing out,the diaphragm springs up.


The ribcage is lowered.


The volume of the thorax decreases.


So air is forced out of the lungs.

Why our bodies need energy?

Contracting muscles



Making proten molecules by linking together amino acids into long chains.



Cell division so that we can repair damaged cells.



Active transport,so that we can move substances across cell membranes up their concentration gradients.



Growth,by building new cells which can then divide to form new cells.



Transmitting nerve impulses,so that we can transfer information quickly from one part of the body to another.



Producing heat inside the body,to keep the body temperature constant even if the environment is cold.


Aerobic respiration

Chemical reactions that take place in mitochondria,which use oxygen to breakdown glucose and other nutrient molecules to release energy for the cell to use.

Anaerobic resporation

Chemical reactions in cells that break down nutrient molecules to release energy,without using oxygen.

Glucose+oxygen gives carbondioxide +water
