All living cells need____________ |
Chemical energy |
What molecule does respiration make |
ATP |
ATP stores_____________ |
Chemical energy |
Where does respiration take place |
Mitochondria |
Respiration that requires oxygen and glucose is called___________ |
Aerobic |
Some cells can make chemical energy from glucose without oxygen this is called_____________ |
Anaerobic respiration |
What process require energy from respiration |
Movement Cell division and growth Maintenance of a constant body temperature Active transport Excretion Reproduction |
When muscles__________ they bring about movement. There are__________ in muscle cells that slide over one another to make each cell_______________. This requires_______________ |
Contract Proteins Shorter Energy from respiration |
___________travel along the nerves. This requires____________ |
Impluses Energy from respiration |
Cells divide by a process called__________. Cells divide to______________. Organisms _________ by making more cells. This requires_____________ |
Mitosis Replace old cells or repair damaged areas Grow Energy from respiration |
Proteins are made from__________ for growth. This requires___________ |
Amino acids Energy from respiration |
_________________animals need to keep their bodies at the same temperature. When the body temperature falls they become____________ when body temperature rises they___________. This requires______________ |
Homeothermic Active and fluff up fur or feathers Sweat Energy from respiration
___________ is the removal of metabolic waste products from the organism. This requires____________ |
Excretion Energy from respiration |
Reproduction requires_________________ |
energy from respiration |
For respiration to take place a food substance such as_____________ is required. ________ make their own glucose. Whilst animals have to eat___________- |
glucose Plants Eat other plants and animals |
Inmost cells_______ is broken down in the presenceof oxygen torelease energyThisis called_______ because oxygen is used
glucose
aerobic respiration |
What is aerobic respiration |
chemical reactions in cells that use oxygen to break down nutrient food molecules to release energy |
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration |
Glucose + Oxygen-----------> Carbon dioxide + Water+ Energy |
What is the symbol equation for aerobic respiration |
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂----------> 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + Energy |
The energy released during__________ is the same as the energy released during____________ |
combustion |
The heat energy given off when food is completely burned will show___________ |
how much energy was in the food |
If we use this energy to heat___________ we can find how much energy was in the food |
water |
What apparatus is used to find the amount of energy in the food |
Calorimeter |
What can we use to test for carbon dioxide |
Lime water or hydrogen carbonate indicator |
What happens when carbon dioxide is bubbled through lime water |
lime water turns milky |
When hydrogen carbonate indicator is neutral the colour is______________. As CO₂ dissolves, it forms a ________ acid which turns the colour_________ |
Red weak yellow |
What experiment would you setup to show CO₂ is produced during respiration |
You would set up 2 test tubes with sunction pipe going through them then a specimen chamber then one more test tube. The first test tube will remove the CO₂ from the air and the second will be there to test if all the CO₂ has been removed. When the air enters the specimen chamber respiration takes place and the organism releases carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide released will turn the lime water in the last test tube milky. |
What experiment would you setup to show heat is released during respiration |
You would put germinating seeds in an insulated flask. Fit the opening of the flask with cotton wool to allow gas exchange and fit a thermometer in the flask. Record the initial temperature. After a few days the temperature will have risen showing that heat is released during respiration |
