Internal Validity

It must measure what it intended to measure.

Face Validity

A test used to improve or assess validity.


Whether a test or measuring instrument appears to be doing what it should and is self evident.

Content Validity

A test used to improve or assess validity.


Focuses on whether the content of a test or measuring instrument covers the whole of the topic area. May include bringing in experts to assess validity.

Concurrent Validity

A test used to improve or assess validity.


Obtaining two sets of scores at the same time - one from the new procedure with unknown validity, and the other from an alternative procedure or test for which validity has already been established. The scores from both tests will be correlated. A positive correlation shows the new procedure is valid.

Predictive Validity

A test used to improve or assess validity.


Similar to Concurrent Validity but the two sets are collected at different points in time.

External Validity

The extent to which results can be generalised to other people places & times.

Context Validity/Ecological Validity

The extent to which research findings can be generalised to settings other than that of the original research.

Temporal Validity

Whether findings can be generalised to people other than those actually involved in the original.

Population Validity

The extent to which research findings can be generalised to people other than those actually involved in the original.
