What are the functions of the uterus?
•Shelter foetus during pregnancy
•Prepare for conception
•Expel uterine contents at end of pregnancy
What are the 3 layers of the uterus?
•Endometrium - ciliated & non-ciliated epithelium (mucous membrane)
•Myometrium - runs in all directions until pregnancy
•Perimetrium - double layer of serous membrane, extension of peritoneum, drapes over uterus
What are the functions of the ovarian (fallopian) tubes?
•Propel ovum towards uterus
•Receives sperm as it travels upwards
•Provides site for fertilisation
What is the position of the ovarian tubes?
•Extends laterally from cornua towards side walls of pelvis
•Arch over ovaries- fringed ends hovering near ovaries to receive ovum
What happens to the endometrium after ovulation?
Progestrone enables:
•glands to become more tortuous & accumulate glycogen
•secretions increase
What happens to the stroma after ovulation?
Becomes spongy & oedematous
Spiral arteries become longer & coil
What is endometrial receptivity?
When endometrium is receptive to implantation
What happens to cervical mucus after ovulation?
•Uterine myometrial excitability is depressed
•Cervical mucus becomes thick & non elastic
What are the functions of the scrotum?
•Forms a pouch in which testes are suspended
•Supports spermatogenesis
•Helps regulate testicular temp (2-3° below core body temp)
What are the functions of the testes?
•Produce testosterone (joins with FSH to promote sperm production)
•Produce sperm
Where is the testes located?
In the Scrotum (kept below body temp. to maintain function)
What is the inner layer of the tunica of the testes made of?
Connective tissue, contains fine network of capillaries
What is the tunica of the testes?
Fibrous covering, divides testes into 200-300 lobules
What is the outer layer of the tunica of the testes made of?
Peritoneum
Where does the production of sperm take place?
•Seminiferous (seed carrying) tubules
•3 lobules in each tube
What are found between tubules?
Interstitial cells- secrete testosterone
What is the epididymis?
Comma shaped, coiled tube which lies on superior surface & travels down posterior aspect into deferent duct (vas deferens)
What does the columnar epithelium secrete?
•Hormones
•Enzymes
•Nutrients
to enable sperm to mature
