Negative views of self (I'm worthless), world (its full of obstacles) and future (it will continue in the same way) |
Limitation of therapy (no link) |
Data between negative thinking and depression is only correlational so cannot infer cause and effect |
Strength of therapy (correlational) |
Researchers assessed cognitive vulnerability on 65 women the the 3rd trimester. High levels of cognitive vulnerability = more likely to suffer post natal depression therefore negative thoughts came first and later led to dression |
Criticism of therapy (saddr but wiser) |
Some 'irrational beliefs'= more accurate. Depressive realism or sadder but wiser effect. Appropriate to change their thinking? |
Limitations of study/therapy (r and d) |
Reductionist (reduces dression down to faulty thinking. Too simplistic. Biological factors) and deterministic (negative thinking may not lead to depression, can also lead to other disorders e.g eating disorders) |
