What is the frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex in charge of?
Speaking, muscle movements, plans and judgements.
What is the parietal lobe of the cerebral cortex in charge of?
Receives sensory input for touch and body position.
What is the occipital lobe of the cerebral cortex in charge of?
Visual areas.
What does acetylcholine do?
When released to muscle cell, it contracts. In the junction of all motor neuron leading to skeletal muscle cells.

Enables muscle contraction, learning, and memory.
What happens when there is a lack of ACH?
Paralyzed.
ie: Botulin
Or loss of memory
ie: Alzheimers
What happens when there's too much ACH?
The body goes into spasms, convulses, and eventually leads to death.
ie: Black widow bite
What does dopamine do?
Influences movement, emotion, learning, and attention.
Also is the 'reward' neurotransmitter.
What happens if you were lacking in dopamine?
The brain would produce tremors and the person would have decreased mobility
ie: Parkinsons
What happens if there's too much dopamine?
Can become schizophrenic
How does cocaine and nicotine relate to dopamine?
They both cause the body to release an excess of dopamine which causes the user to temporarily feel good about themselves.
What does serotonin do?
Affects hunger, sleep, arousal, mood
What happens when there is a lack of serotonin?
Depression
What does norepinephrine do?
Helps control alertness and arousal
How is cocaine and amphetemines linked to norepinephrine?
They release a shit ton of it.
What happens when there is an undersupply of norepinephrine?
It can lead to depression.
What does GABA do?
It helps keep the CNS at a normal level.
Who discovered the function of endorphins?
Pert and Snyder
What do endorphins do?
They are natural opiates in the body that are released after painful and vigorous exercise. They lessen pain and boost mood.
What are the three secitons of the brain?
Forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain
What is in the forebrain?
The anterior and largest part of the brain, it includes the cerebal hemispheres, limbic system, thalamus and hypothalamus, and the corpus callosum.
What does the forebrain do?
It controls cognitive, sensory and motor function, regulate temperature, reproductive functions, eating, sleeping, and display of emotions. Essentially, our personality!
What is the prefrontal cortex in charge of?
thinking, motivation, planning the future, impulse control, emotional responses, regulates experiences (alcohol causes you to lose impulse control and slows things down in general)
How do we know so much about the prefrontal cortex?
Prefrontal lobotomies and Phineas Gage.
What is the hindbrain comprised of?
Comprises of the pons, medulla, and cerebellum
What does the hindbrain do?
Coordinates motor activity, posture, equilibrium, and sleep patterns and regulate unconscious but essential functions like breathing and blood circulation
What does the midbrain do?
Controls functions like visual and auditory systems like eye movement. Involved in body movement.
What are the major brain divisions?
Cerebrum, diencephalon, cerebellum, brain stem
What is the forebrain consists of in term of brain organs?
Hippocampus, hypothalamus, limbic system, cerebral cortex
What does the hippocampus do?
Processes
What does the amygdala do?
Control fear and aggression
What does the hypothalamus do?
Hunger, thirst, body temperature, and sexual behavior, monitors blood chemistry, takes controls from other parts of the brain and also triggers release of dopamine associated with sex, eating, and drinking.
Who discovered the hypothalamus' function?
Olds and Millner with rats
What does the cerebral cortex do?
It is the ultimate control and information process center.
What are the parts of the cerebral cortex?
Frontal, occipital, parietal, temporal
What does the parietal cerebral cortex do?
Sensory input for touch and perception.
What does the occipital cortex do?
Visual areas
What does the temporal cortex do?
Auditory areas
Where is the cortex located?
The outer bark of the brain.
