What is Personality?

Unique way each individual thinks, acts, and feels throughout life.
Unconscious Mind
Part of the mind that remains hidden at all times surfacing only in dreams and in some behavior
Id

Most primitive part of personality. Completely unconscious, pleasure-seeking, amoral part of the personality that exists at birth.
Ego

Mostly conscious. Far more rational, logical, and cunning than the id

Superego

Contains the conscience. Moral center of personality
Defense Mechanisms

Ways of dealing with anxiety through unconsciously distorting ones perception of reality
Oral Stage
0-18 months. Erogenous zone is the mouth. Weaning that occurs too soon or too late can result in an orally fixated adult personality (over eating, drinking too much, chain smoking, talking too much, nail biting, etc.)
Anal Stage

18-36 months. Erogenous zone is the anus. Toilet training not done correctly can result in anal expulsive personalities or anal retentive personalities
Phallic Stage

3-6 years. Erogenous zone is the genitals. Sexual curiosity is awakened. Children fall in love with the parent of the opposite sex and dislike the parent of the same sex.
Latency Stage

6 years-puberty. Hidden sexual feelings. Grow and develop intellectually, physically, and socially. Boys only play with boys and girls only play with girls
Genital Stage

Puberty and adulthood. Sexual Reawakening. Focus of sexuality becomes other teenagers instead of the parents.
Alfred Adler's theory of inferiority

Oldest child feels inferior becomes over achiever. Middle child feels superior becomes competitive. Youngest child feels inferior becomes rebellious. Theory of compensation.

Loose ties between individuals. People tend to look after themselves and their immediate families only.

Projective Tests
Mostly inaccurate subjective tests. Low reliability and low vaidity. Used as a starting point for digging deeper into the clients anxieties and concerns.
Rorschach Inkblot test

Clients are asked to say what they see in each inkblot
TAT

Thematic Apperception Test. Client is asked to tell a story about the person or people in a black and white picture set up to seem ambiguous
MMPI

Tests for abnormal behavior and thinking patterns in personality
