Consistency

Minority Influence is effective provided there is stability in the expressed position over time and agreement among different members of the minority. When people are first exposed to a minority with a different view they assume the minority is in error. However if the minority adopt a consistent approach, others come to reassess the situation and consider the situation more carefully.

Commitment

The degree to which members of a minority are dedicated to a particular cause or activity. The greater the perceived commitment, the greater the influence.

Flexibility

A willingness to be flexible and compromise when expressing an opinion. As minorities are usually powerless compared to the majority, they must negotiate their position with the majority rather than enforce it which means flexibility is more effective at changing minority opinion than rigidity of arguments.

Drawing Attention

Minorities can bring about social change by drawing attention to an issue. If their views differ to those held by the majority, it creates a conflict that they are motivated to reduce.

Cognitive Conflict

The minority creates a conflict between what majority group members currently believe and the position advocated by the minority. This doesn't necessarily result in a move towards the minority position but it does make majority group members think about the issues being challenged.

Consistency of position

Minorities tend to be more influential in bringing about social change when they express their arguments consistently (over time and with each other). Consistent arguments mean they are more likely to be taken seriously as they seem more organised.

The augmentation principle

The minority show that they are committed to their cause and are prepared to show their cause and are willing to suffer for it. If a minority appears to be willing to suffer for their views they are seen as more committed and are so are taken more seriously by people
