alpha waves

the relatively slow brain waves of a relaxed, awake state. Their frequency is about 8 to 12 Hertz (cycles per second)

Beta waves

the relatively fast and irregular waves of an awake, alert state. These waves are found in both wakefulness and REM sleep. Their frequency is about 12 to 30 Hz

Theta waves

these moderately large and slow waves are found in NREM2 sleep

delta waves

the large, slow brain waves associated with NREM3 sleep

deep sleep

stage NREM3 of the sleep cycle

REM

rapid eye movement sleep; a recurring sleep stage during which vivid dreams commonly occur: also known as paradoxical sleep because the muscles are relaxed (except for minor twitches) but other body systems are active. Dreaming occurs.

Electoencephalogram (EEG)

an amplified recording of the waves of electrical activity that sweep across the brains surface

Electroocculagram (EOG)

an amplified recording of the waves of electrical activity that occur around the eye. Often used in sleep studies.

Polygraph

a device that measures several of the physiological responses accompanying emotion; commonly called a "lie detector."

Emotions

responses of the whole organism; involving physical arousal, expressive behavior, and conscious experiences

emotional blends

a combination of the facial codes associated with two different emotions displayed on the face at the same time

facial code

the system of emotional signals displayed by altering the positions of the facial muscles around the eyes and the mouth

primary effects

the six basic emotions that are displayed on the face: surprise, fear, disgust, anger, happiness, and sadness. Paul Ekman identified these

microexpressions

small brief facial movements that signal emotional experiences, even in people who have been trained to hide their emotions
