|
1) Only use restraint to prevent a person from hurting themselves or others.
2) Never a punishment because that would be abuse. 3) Use your body as a barrier, not a force. 4) Never put pressure on a persons wind area. |

How to cope with a Difficult Student
|
1) Do not take negative behavior personally.
2) Do not judge yourself by the degree to which you can limit the child's negative behavior. 3) Do not get into a power game. A student's capacity to be disruptive will always win. 4) View the behavior objectively and scientifically. (behavioral strategy) 5) View the behavior as a function of the student's pain. 6) Take many breaks away from the student. 7) Use humor when outside the classroom. 8) Surrender all plans. |

To effectively treat a child we must understand the support systems the child has and the environmental influences. These include: family, school, friends, and other support systems.

How to get along with parents as a teacher
|
1) Be a good communicator
- Spend time letting the parents know what the child did good. - establish a good communication system (ie. how to contact/ when to contact/ be respectful of their situations) 2) Be informative with parents but never arrogant. -Never come off as an expert, be a consultant -Teacher should let the parent know that it's a shared responsibility for the student. -Teacher + Parent = Mutual Trust -Make each others responsibilities clear. -Be an active listener (validate their feelings, don't look at your watch) 3) Working together reinforces partnership. 4) Be a good model. 5) Never treat parents as a homogenous group. |

How to deal with an angry parent
|
1) Employ active listening
-Write down their complaints. -At the end ask if their any other complaints. 2) Never get defensive. 3) Create a line: Indicate if it's been crossed. 4) Find something that you can agree with with the parent. Find a common ground. 5) Map out a strategy for the teacher that the parent can support. |
