Schachter & Singer's Theory of Emotions

Physiological state is not the same as emotion. The intensity of physiological reaction determines the intensity of an emotion NOT the type of emotion. Cognitive appraisal determines emotion.

Pure Autonomic Failure

Autonomic nervous system fails to regulate internal organs. People with PAF recognize situations that call for strong emotions but report less intense emotions

Nonspecific response of the body to any demand made upon it. Considers change as a stressor but not chronic problems such as poverty

Direct effects of stress vs. indirect

Direct:


•Prolonged exposure to cortisol that damages the hippocampus (memory) and inhibits immune system function



Indirect:

•Long-term damage in health
