Phenomenological approach
Trust client to make constructive choices Freedom, choice, values, personal responsibility, autonomy, purpose, and meaning. Both call for therapist to enter the clients subjective world, and both say client can become self-aware and self-healing. |

Differences between PCT and Existentialism/Gestalt
|
Existentialists say we are faced with anxiety of choosing/creating ID in meaningless world.
Humanists are less anxietyized: we all have natural poetntial to actualize, thru which we find meaning. Underlying humanistic vision: acorn will grow under the right conditions. Existentialists say we have no such internal acorn/nature. We will not necessarily grow into an oak. We must choose this condition. |

|
State in which self-experiences are accurately symbolized in the self-concept. For therapist: matching one's inner experiencing with external expressions.
