Naikan Therapy
Aime: discover meaning lin life and repair damaged relationships.
Move from self-ceneteredness to importance of relationships. Narrow focus on self leads to neurotic/painful outcomes. E.g. depressed clients do well to look outward. Lots silent meditaion on how individual depends on others thru life. Residential week long sessions. Antithetical to Naikan. Humanistic/psychodynamic self-exam are selfish. |
Erikson's lifespan theory used. Major modifications:
Ages 2-4, says Erikson, are for developing autonomy. In some cultures, this is seen as pathological. Africa, Japan, or South America focus instead on connectedness to caregiver.
Tamase says not to focus on particular tasks at certain stages, b/c every culture will define that phase differently. Individuals find their own inuq path, but within relationship network. |

Advantages of Tamase over Erikson
No culture bound expectations
More focus on self-in-relation. More complex view of ID development than Erikson Erikson’s work is descriptive. Tamase is action/treatment focused. |
Making meaning from past
Similar to psychodyn. b/c past affects present.
Tamase avoids giving interpretations for client. Simply help client review. If counselor listens well enough, client discovers repeating patterns/interprets. DCT questions (???) Dialectic/systemic perspective applied to life span theory. |
