What is the mechanism of action for stimulants? |
Cocaine: blocks dopamine reuptake proteins so increase in dopamine. Amphetamines: block dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake proteins. |
|
What is the mechanism of action for nicotine? |
Stimulates specific acetylcholine receptors, called nicotine receptors, which in turn stimulate dopamine releasing neurons. |
|
What is the mechanism of action for opiates? |
Inhibits GABA neurons that would normally inhibit dopamine releasing, so increase in dopamine. |
|
What is the mechanism of action for marijuana? |
*Stimulates cannabinoid receptors on presynaptic neurons that release glutamate or GABA. (Reverse transmission). So, can be excitatory or inhibitory. *Reverse transmission also at serotonin neuron that cause nausea |
|
What is the mechanism of action for methylphenidate? |
Block dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake proteins, this causes an increased concentration of dopamine in the synapse. |
