Preload

The resting tension or stretch on the heart muscle.

-Correlates with the amount of blood in the ventricle at the end of diastole (the end diastoilic volume)

Afterload

-The force or pressure against which the left ventricle must exert during systole to open the arotic valve and therefore eject blood systemically

-Proportional to ventricle size and compliance, also related to the systemic vascular resistance

Frank Starling Law

-Ventricular volume (preload), determines amount of blood ejected

-Increased volume causes increased ventricular stretch and therefore improves forces of contraction
