Tinker v. Des Moines Kids wanted to protest vietnam war so they wore black arm bands in protest and they were suspended by the school. Supreme court ruled in favor of Tinker 7-2 against the school.

How does a case get to the supreme court |
Parties who are not satisfied with the decision of a lower court must petition the U.S. Supreme Court to hear their case. The primary means to petition the court for review is to ask it to grant a writ of certiorari. |

Death Penalty |
Furman v. Georgia Furman broke into a house and shot the resident as the man was leaving the house. Supreme court ruled in favor of Furman in a 5-4 decision that he did not get the death penalty because it was crule and unusual punishment. |

Mapp v. Ohio Dollree Mapp appealed citing 4th amendment after being convicted of obtaining illegal materials. this court case asked the question should evidence from search and seizure not protected by the fourth amendment be admitted to a state court. the court ruled in favor of Mapp in a 6-3 decision stating that evidence obtained my this sort of search seizure is not permitted to be allowed into state courts. |

Near v. Minnesota Near was a newspaper writer and claimed that law enforcement were corrupt and after the paper came out he was gunned down and sent to the hospital and after he was released he was attacked again. the supreme court ruled that in rare cases censorship is unconstitutional. 5-4 in favor of Near. |
