Conservatism
Another term for realism, a perspective of IR that has a very pessimistic view of human nature.
Realism
A conservative perspective on IP emphasizing the inevitability of conflict among nations, the centrality of power, and the ever-present threat of war. Believe that the basic realities of IR are unchanging.
Collective/group egoism
The tendency of social groups to view themselves as not only different from other groups but also better in some respect. An element of conservative or realist thought particularly important for understanding the dynamics of social conflict.
Hans Mogenthau (1891-1976)
One of the most influential exponents of a realist approach to IP.
George Kennan (1904-2005)
One of the leading figures of the realist school of IP. CONTAINMENT.
Anarchy
The absence of a central gov/political authority.
Balance of power
Idea that nations of equal power won't engage in war for fear of losing.
Liberalism
Social, political, and economic philosophy based on a positive view of human nature, the inevitability of social progress , and the harmony of interests. Alt. to conservatism.
Idealism
An approach to international politics based on liberal assumptions and principles. Its more optimistic (or utopian) versions envision a world in which law, institutions, and diplomacy replace power competition and the use of force.
Liberal internationalism
Another term, along with idealism, for the application of liberal assumptions and principles to IR.
Democratic liberalism
A strain of international liberal thought that claims democracies are more peaceful than are nondemocracies, especially in their relations with each other.
Commercial liberalism
A version of liberal international thought that stresses the importance of interdependence in trade and investment as a force for peace.
Liberal institutionalism
I version of liberalism that stresses the positive tole of international organizations and institutions in promoting cooperation and peace.
Normative liberalism
A version of liberalism that stresses the growth and spread of moral/ethical norms to change the global view of war.
