Alliteration
the same or similar sounds at the beginning of words
Allusion
a reference to a historical event , or other pieces of work
Assonance
the repetition or a pattern of similar sounds, especially vowels, and example of this are tongue twisters
Ballad
a poem that tells a story similar to a folk tale or legend and often has a repeated refrain
Blank Verse
poetry that is written in unrhymed iambic pentameter - example of this is in shakespear's work
Carpe Diem
a Latin expression that means seize the day. poems that usually urge the reader to to live for the day or enjoy pleasures of the moment
Figurative Language
the intentional and imaginative uses of words and comparisons that are not literal, but create original and vivid, and often unexpected images and associations.
Hyperbole
a figure of speech in which deliberate exaggeration is used for emphasis. ie: tons of money, waiting for ages, floods of tears
Imagery
an image is an expression of recreation through language of any experience perceived through the senses. if you can picture it in your mind it is imagery.
Irony
Is a tone or figure of speech that has a discrepancy- a striking difference or contradiction btwn what is expressed and what is meant or expected. I.e: a bank-robber robes a police station
Metaphor
a figure of speech in which two things are compared, usually by saying one thing is another. they do not use like or as
Onomatopoeia
the use of words whose sound reflects their sense of meaning ie: buzz, hiss, moan, the snake slithered
Personification
a form of metaphor, or simile in which nonhuman things. giving a nonhuman object human qualities.
Oxymoron
a figure of speech in which two sharply contrasting terms are paired for emphasis or ironic effect. I.e: army intelligence, sweet and sour, same difference , cold as hell
Simile
a figure of speech in which two things are compared using the words like or as. I.e: she was hyper like a bunny
Symbol
anything that stands for something else. I.e: symbol of life, unity is a circle
Anaphora
the repetition of the same word or group of words at the beginning of successive clauses, sentences, or lines
Euphony
harmony or beauty of sound that provides a pleasing effect to the ear, usually sought-for in poetry for effect.
Modulation
the harmonious use of langugae relative to the variations of stresses and pitch
Phonetic Symbolism or SOund symbolism
sound suggestiveness, the association of particular word-sounds with common areas of meaning so that other words or similar sounds that came to be associated with those meanings
Cacophony
discordant sounds in jarring juxtaposition of harsh letters or syllables, sometimes inadvertent, but often delibertely used in poetry for effect as in the opening line of fences.
