Stanza
a group of lines forming a unit in a poem or song. A stanza in a poem is similar to a paragraph in prose.
Imagery
the "word-pictures" that writers create to evoke an emotional response. Imagery uses sensory details or describes something that appeals to the five senses.
Concrete/Sensory Details
Referring to a specific thing; referring to any of the senses.
Point Of View
The perspective that the poem is told from.
1st person- I, Me
2nd person-You
3rd person- He, She, It
Figurative Language
language used for descriptive effect in order to convey ideas or motions. They are not literally true.
Metaphor
Figurative language that compares two unlike things with out using like or as.
Simile
figurative language that compare two unlike things using like or as.
Personification
Figurative language in which a nonhuman thing or quality is talked about as if it were human.
Symbolism
Language in which a person, place, thing, or event stands both for itself and for something beyond itself. (double meaning)
Voice
The style and quality of the writing, including word choice, sentence structure, and evidence of investment. Has personality and shows personal expression.
Audience
The person/people the poem is written for.
