Sexual Reproduction
• involes two parent plants
• a cell from each combining to produce a seed which becomes a new plant
• this plant has features of both plants e.g. apples, dandelions
Asexual Reproduction
• involves only one parent
• cells from this parent divide and a new plant grows from these cells
• this plant is identical to the parent e.g. strawberries, potatoes
Structure of the flower
Sexual reproduction is the function of the flower.
Structure of flower:-
• Sepal
• Petal
• Carpel-female reproductive organ, made up of three parts: stigma, style and ovary.
• Stamen-the male reproductive organ, made up of two parts: anther and filament.
Sepal
• These protect the flower while it is still a bud.
• They often disappear as flower matures.
Petal
• In insect pollinated plants, these may be large, colorful or scented in order to attract the pollinator.
• In wind pollinated plants they are very small and dull.
Stigma (Carpel)
• This is at the top of the carpel
• It is where the pollen containing the male reproductive gamete lands.
Style (Carpel)
• This stalk leads to the ovary
• The pollen travels down through it
Ovary (Carpel)
• This is where the egg cell containing the female reproductive gamete, is produced.
• It is also where the male and female gametes fuse together to form the new zygote, which will become the new plant
Anther (Stamen)
• This is at the top of the stamen
• It is where the pollen containing the male reproductive gamete is produced and released
Filament (Stamen)
• This is the stalk, it supports the anther
