1st Stage

SENSIORIMOTOR PERIOD - AGES birth to 2 years old
infant is trying to make sense of the world
-Think Senorimotor= sensory perceptions & motor activites--looking, sucking, grasping and listening to learn about the environment

1. Object permanence: A child's understanding that objects still exist even when they cannot be seen or heard-- a ball rolling under a rug

- language skills begin to develop== cooing and ahhing
FIRST WORDS-- 1 years old
TWO WORDS 21-24 months (bye bye baby mommy)

IMITATION- babies will imitate facial expressions
2nd Stage

PREOPERATIONAL STAGE AGES 2-7 years old
-the child lacks certain mental operations that form the basis of adult logic
-kids lack CONSERVATION SKILLS

Conservation: the amount of something remains the same dispite change in appearance
Example- LIQUID TEST- having 2 same cups of water/pouring one of the cups in a larger bowl-child thinks she has more water than you

EGOCENTRISM :: inability to take another person's point of view--- Example-- Parent asks child what does grandma want for her birthday and she thinks barbies-from her own point of view
Stage 3

CONCRETE OPERATIONAL STAGE
AGES 7-11
-Children begin to think logically about events-they do have a difficulty understanding abstract and hypothetical concepts.
-they are able to solve conservation tasks--LIQUID TEST
Stage 4

FORMAL OPERATIONS Ages 11- above (teen years)
-allows adolescents to think logically about their future
ABSTRACT THINKING--children consider possible out comes and consequences from their actions

-to think hypothetically--one day I will be a teacher, firemen etc
