What is conduction?

In heat: Heat transfer through contact/collision of successive electrons and atoms

In electricity: Flow of electric charge through a conductor

What are three processes of heat transfer?

Conduction, convection, and radiation

What are the differentiations of conduction, convention, and radiation?

Conduction: Heat transfer by contact

Convection: Heat transfer by moving heated liquid or gas

Radiation: Heat transfer with no contact

What determines if something is a good conductor?

How well any solid object conducts heat depending on the bonding within its atomic structure

What atomic environment do we see in good conductors?

Atoms have one or more loose outer shell electrons

What is an insulator?

Any object that resists the motion of molecules or is a poor heat conductor

What atomic environment do we see in good insulators?

Typically a tightly bound outer electron shell

Are liquids and gases (fluids) good or poor conductors of heat?

Poor conductors

How does insulation work in regards to home insulation?

It doesn't prevent heat loss, it slows the heat transfer down

What is convection?

Heat transfer by movement of a fluid or gas

What does fluid refer to?

Liquids and gases

Why does rising air expand?

Less atmospheric pressure

Why does rising air cool?

More space between molecules

What is radiation?

Movement of heat/energy from one object to another without physical contact

How is radiation energy transferred?

It's transmitted by electromagnetic waves

How does energy from the sun pass through space and through Earth's atmosphere to warm the surface?

Radiation energy (or radiant energy)

What is frequency?

The rate of vibration of a wave

What can be said about frequency?

The higher the frequency, the more energetic the radiant energy

What is true about substances above absolute zero in regards to energy?

All substances at any temp above absolute zero emit radiant energy
