3 main points:
1. All matter is made of atoms and molecules that act like tiny particles.
2. These tiny particles are always in motion. The higher the temperature, the faster the particles move.
3. At the same temperature, more massive (heavier) particles move slower than less massive (lighter) particles.
What is the Kinetic Theory?
a useful tool for seeing differences between three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases.
the force exerted per unit area of a surface.
What is pressure?
This causes gases to be dangerous and explosive.
The resistance of a fluid to flow.
What is viscosity?
a characteristic of Motor oil making it vary in thickness depending on heat; example: 20W50 ranges betw. 20 weight when cold and 50 weight when hot.
The ability to change or move matter.
What is energy?
heat, light, nuclear, mechanical, chemical, solar, & plasma are types
The change of a substance from a liquid to a gas.
What is evaporation?
part of water cycle that happens slower in cool than warm weather
The change of a substance from a gas to a liquid.
What is condensation?
Clouds & fog
The change of a substance from a solid to a gas without becoming a liquid.
What is sublimation?
dry ice sublimes to form gaseous carbon dioxide but no liquid
