Describe photosynthesis |
A chemical reaction which takes place producing food for the plant using CO2, chlorophyll, water and light- it happens in the leaves of plants |
What four things do plants need for photosynthesis? |
Water. Chlorophyll. Light. Carbon dioxide. |
What two things do plants make during photosynthesis? |
Glucose and oxygen. |
What are two reasons farmers build greenhouses? |
1) To maintain and optimum temperature 3) To ensure no pests attack the crops |
What are the five points to test for starch in leaves. |
1) Place the lead in boiling water for one minute to stop photosynthesising 2) Place a test tube full of ethanol into hot water and place the leaf into the ethanol, removing the chlorophyll 3) Take the lead out of the ethanol and wash it in a water bath to soften it. 4) Spread the leaf out on a white tile 5) Cover the leaf with iodine solution- the areas with starch will stain black. |
Describe how light can limit photosynthesis. |
If there’s not enough light, there isn’t enough energy for a plant to convey an excess of CO2 into oxygen. |
Describe how temperature affects photosynthesis |
High temperatures cause cells to denature but higher temperature below the optimum temperature gives more energy for enzymes. |
What is the word equation for photosynthesis? |
Carbon dioxide + water ————Light————> Glucose + oxygen |
How are palisade cells adapted for photosynthesis? |
They’re the main site of photosynthesis as they have more chloroplasts than spongey mesophyll- Large vacuoles restrict chloroplast to a layer near the outside of the cell to reach sunlight easier. |
How are air spaces adapted for photosynthesis? |
They’re loose for efficient gas exchange and quick diffusion. |
How are guard cells adapted for photosynthesis? |
They control water loos within the leaf |
How is stomata adapted for photosynthesis? |
The stomata opening controls the rate of respiration limiting the levels of water from the leaf. |
Describe two uses of glucose in plants |
1) Respiration, energy to convert other masses of glucose 2) Cell walls, to make proteins and build cell walls made from cellulose. |
Describe why roots are important to plants |
The roots suck the water and nutrients up out of the soil and into the plant using active transport. |
