Libertarianism
is a specific theory about free will, theory that says we do have free will.
2 types of Libertarianism
1) Event Causation
2) Agent Causation
Event Causation
an action is caused by a physical action
Example( falling dominos)
Agent Causation
they have the power to cause something without themselves being subject to causal determination.
This is the question of mind & body problem?
How exactl are teh physical states of human bodies related to mental states of human minds?
(answering this question is not easy)
the categories of the mind/body problem
1) Physicalism
2) Dualism
3) Idealism
Physicalism
believe that the physical states of the body are more fundamental than the mental states of the mind.
Dualism
rejects the idea that our minds and mental states are less fundamental than oru bodies and physical states.
Idealism
theory that explains how minds and bodies are related to each other.
(Opposed to Physicalism)
Decarts Substance Dualism
classical version of dualism, minds and bodies are different kinds of entities.
Bodies, are physical substances located in space and time.
Minds, are nonextended thinking substances.
3 Arguments for defence of Substance Dualism
1) Near-death
2) Conceivability Argument
3) Intentionaliy
Near- Death expeance
The mind seperates form the body and would be considered two seperate entities, at this point the mind and body does not interact.
Conceivability Argumant
I can conceive of myself with out a body, but not without a mind
My mind is more intently connected to me than my body
My mind had some property my body does not have therefor they cannot be the same thing.
Lebinz's Law
(exapmle)
Paul, conspiracy theory, that Dan Quayle is George W. Bush. clames that bush is not who he says he is, that he is really quyale, not logical becouse Quayle is taller than Bush, can not be ture theory
Lebinz's Law states
if two things in question differ in their properties such as one thing has something the other does not then they can not be the same thing.
Problem of interaction
is dualism, if you say the mind and body are seperate things, than how do they interact, The body effect the mind, the mind effects the body, the interaction seem to be the same things,
Dualists explanation of interaction is parallelism
Intentionality
the representational quality of certain mental states, a thought is a representation of the thing you are thinking about.
Parallelism
mind and body does not interact they run parrel to each other. no interaction.
What is a Category mistake?
some philosphers clam Dualest are making this mistake, example:
parents want to see college, give tour but tell you, thats great but still want to see college, not possible since college is an Idea, that is a part of all things they have been shown,
confusing what category the college is to be in.. the clam that a category mistake is being made when one says the mind is separate from the body.
2 types of Physicalism
1) Identity
2) Functionalism
(Physicalism) Identity
Mind and brain are identical
Brain States
Physicalism
the basic tenet of physicalist theories about the mind is the idea that we can explain mental states in terms of physical states of the body
what do Identity and functionalism have in common?
Mental states are dependent on physical states
How do Identity and functionalism differ?
Identity- mind and brain are identical mental states or just brain states
functionalism- mental states are dependent on physical states.
The main Idea behind functionalism
mind= software
Brain = hardware
Psyche
Greek meaning "soul"
What is the plot to the movie" Matrix"
a computer generated dream world, breaking out of this dream world,
saving the world from the machine's that are in control of the people.
what does the Matrix deal with?
Ego Centric Predicamdnent
Ego Centric Predicamdnent
Ralph Barton Perry
the predicamdnent, we are all trap in our own minds, in terms of verifying reality, accept this is reality, we cannot get out side of our minds to verify true existence.
How is ego centric predicamdnent in the movie Matrix
being in the matrix, is your reality until some one from the outside pulls leo out of the matrix and shows him true reality.
