*causes strong uterine contractions, there is a higher incidence of uterine hyper-stimulation *more convenient and less expensive than dinoprostone *not approved for cervical ripening (but we use it anyway)
What should the nurse be aware of when administering uterine stimulants (oxytocics)?
NEVER use dinoprostone or misoprostol with a woman who has had any uterine surgery.
What is an adverse effect of oxytocin?
water retention / water intoxication
How does methylergonovine work in postpartum bleeding, what do we need to be watching for in giving this medication?
it stimulates the adrenergic, dopaminergic, and serotonergic receptors which causes one sustained contraction ****RISK OF SEVERE HYPERTENSION
What are the adverse effects of carboprost tromethamine?
GI reactions, vomiting and diarrhea, Fever, vasoconstriction, constriction of the bronchii
