antibody used for the prevention of RSV infections in infants and immunocompromised, young children with CHD. Anitviral. Preg category C.
Palivizumab (Synagis)
a virustatic. can be oral or aerosol. it is active against RSV, HCV, influenza A and B. It is only used for SEVERE RSV pneumonia bc it is very expensive and benefits are usually minimal.
Ribavirin (Virazole)
pregnancy category X! pregnant women should not even be caring for someone on Ribavirin aerosol therapy. PO causes anemia. this drug may cause deterioration of pulmonary function. breathing should be monitored closely!
Adverse Effects of RIBAVIRIN
Oral inhalation: absorbed in lungs. plasma concentrations are low. excreted in urine and feces.
Pharmacokinetics of RIBAVIRIN
hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylaxis with follow-up doses. severe reactions can be treated with epinephrine and supportive care.
Adverse Effects of PALIVIZUMAB
well absorbed after IM injection. duration of 30 days before next shot for every month for entire RSV season.
Pharmacokinetics of PALIVIZUMAB
Palivizumab should be given before RSV season commences. (December-March in the USA).
When do you give PALIVIZUMAB?
antocholinergic drug used to treat asthma, COPD. inhalation. promotes bronchodilation. fast acting.
Atrovent (ipratropium)
drugs that improve lung function through blockage of muscarinic receptors in the bronchi, causeing bronchial dilation
